PyTorch Helion Enhances GPU Kernel Optimization
PyTorch Helion now uses autotuning to optimize GPU kernels, reducing the need for manual code tuning.

What happened
PyTorch Helion enables developers to write GPU kernels in Python, with its autotuner handling optimization tasks that previously required hand-written Triton code.
The autotuner explores thousands of kernel configurations, often achieving performance close to or exceeding expert-tuned code.
Why it matters
The current state of kernel optimization is constrained by default compiler settings, which are not optimized for specific workloads. Helion addresses this by integrating with NVIDIA's CompileIQ to optimize ptxas controls, generating a portable Advanced Control File (ACF) for further performance improvements.
Key details
The kernels used in this study are from the pretuned_kernels/ directory in the Helion repository, covering 27 real-world model code shapes. These kernels are pre-tuned with ahead-of-time heuristic files for architectures like H100 and B200.
The autotuning process for these kernels is done offline, and the results are baked in for runtime performance with no search cost. Helion's autotuner searches for optimal tile sizes, warp counts, pipeline stages, and memory access strategies in its kernel definitions.
